The Show Will go on!

The show will go on, expenses have been covered by a guarantee from a friend of the BIOS Organization but the loan must be repaid. We still need to raise approximately $2500 to cover costs. Can you become a GREENFEST Sponsor?

If 100 people feel $25 is fair to see 19 bands we will meet our cost goal!http://greenfest.ws/vendorpayment.htm

Our goal $3100 by friday morning...we are at $425

We need a miracle right now for Greenfest

We need a miracle right now for Greenfest

Due to a last minute demand from the Board of Ed for the BIOS Organization to cover all janitorial and security costs of $3100, GREENFEST is in serious danger of being canceled with in the next 24 hours.
The BIOS Organization has invested over 400 hours organizing this event on behalf of the Sound School.
19 bands from around the world have volunteered their time to play at this benefit.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Crunch Time Starts Now!

We now have 21 bands coming from as far as Beirut Lebanon, Washington DC and NYC.
Today I found out there are 4-5 school bands that have not registered.  We are now on a tight time line and the following  month must be devoted to organization.

Permits, Posters and final band registration MUST be completed by Monday to ensure the success of the event.  The amount of attention that is brought to the Sound School because of this event is tremendous.

In addition to the Battle of the Bands, we will be filming a Music Video and Movie at GREENFEST that will feature the Sound School to the world.  The movie is called "WaterCar"  how appropriate it is filmed at an Aquacultural School.   The Movie is being Produced by myself and one of the founders of YO MTV RAPS.  Check it out!  http://watercarmovie.com/ Everyone that shows up to GREENFEST will be in the movie.  The winner of the Battle of The Bands will be featured in the Music video.

We need your help, so if you have signed up for a committee please make some time to follow through.
Do you know of a teacher or parent that would be interested in helping, please invite them to fill out the volunteer form.  Thanks

Creating something during the event

Food for thought!

We love raucous festivals like Burning Man and music jamborees like Bonaroo, but we’ve never heard of one that combines the spirit of these events with the mission to actually accomplish something. Like building a build a micro wind turbine farm.

Such is the idea behind “Villages in the Sky: DIY World Change” — a a family-friendly renewable energy and sustainability celebration located in the Ozarks and scheduled for June 2010. Unlike gatherings that strive to leave things the way they were before anyone arrived, Villages in the Sky is looking to take advantage of crowd sourcing to create a better place than existed before. Participants will help build a micro wind turbine farm and bio-mass systems as well as giant play structures (zip lines, tree houses, ropes courses, etc). The entire event is internally cash free event which promotes a volunteer ethic and strangers working cooperatively for a shared goal. In fact, the main goal is to leave behind the beginnings of a locally self sufficient eco-village. Perhaps even one inspired by the Ewoks.

Down Easter Alexa, By Billy Joel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDQ04uHn9nE&feature=related

Well I'm on the Downeaster "Alexa"

And I'm cruising through Block Island Sound
I have charted a course to the Vineyard
But tonight I am Nantucket bound

We took on diesel back in Montauk yesterday
And left this morning from the bell in Gardiner's Bay
Like all the locals here I've had to sell my home
Too proud to leave I worked my fingers to the bone

So I could own my Downeaster "Alexa"
And I go where the ocean is deep
There are giants out there in the canyons
And a good captain can't fall asleep

I've got bills to pay and children who need clothes
I know there's fish out there but where God only knows
They say these waters aren't what they used to be
But I've got people back on land who count on me

So if you see my Downeaster "Alexa"
And if you work with the rod and the reel
Tell my wife I am trawling Atlantis
And I still have my hands on the wheel

Now I drive my Downeaster "Alexa"
More and more miles from shore every year
Since they tell me I can't sell no stripers
And there's no luck in swordfishing here.

I was a bayman like my father was before
Can't make a living as a bayman anymore
There ain't much future for a man who works the sea
But there ain't no island left for islanders like me

Just invited Bobby Flay Think Big, don't hold back!

Hi Bobby,
We are throwing a green festival at the Sound School and Long Wharf Park in New Haven and would love to grill with you.  The Sound School is a regional vocational high school for agriculture and aquaculture...can we do a special on seafood and salads?
In one week we had 6 bands sign up and I have every intention of  creating the largest musical event in New Haven's history. And whats a festival with out food. The school is located on Oyster point and many of the schools waterfront buildings were used by the industry.

Of course some organic beef is always welcome.  Bobby you are my first choice and know you are a very busy guy, but I will wait a week before asking anyone else.  Really look forward to hearing from you.  It is  a benefit but since it involves food I am sure we could figure out how to make it financially viable for you. Perhaps your company could cater it.  The location would allow tens of thousands of people to literally walk to the festival.

Thank you for your consideration

GREEN FEST! Battle of the bands, Talent Show, sidewalk sale and oyster fest rolled into one!

Join us in creating  a spectacular event to support the Sound School's efforts to go green.   An alternative high school for Aqua/agriculture students. The school has 5 buildings and over 100,000 sf on  a beautiful waterfront section of New Haven Harbor.  What a view, reasonable amount of parking, restaurant at one end of the street, roof top band stand on top of library, next door to 2 ball fields and Long Wharf Park (waterfront open space with trails), location rich in history.  Check it out on google maps

Battle of the bands, block party, booths for green, healthy, holistic, organic, sustainable and energy efficient vendors, organic bake sale, school store, plant sale, rain barrels and much more ...click on the comments below to view or add additional ideas.
Raising awareness and money for the greening of The Sound School!

Ask and you will recieve...never know someone might write  a song for/about you.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77HFEy2ORFE

Student Chat

A Place to chat about the possibilities of making the campus more green.

Monday, February 1, 2010

To get what you have never had, you must do what you have never done.

At 211 degrees water will sit still. at 212 degrees it will boil, create steam and move a locomotive.

One voice can be lost in a crowd, or it can be directed to inspire. I shared my battle of the bands concept with 2 classes, they told over 500 people in one week. Your memos can inspire others to help you make great changes at your school, what you learn from the project could change the course of your life.

Please post your memos and share them with the world.

Yesterday I picked up the phone and called the sales director of MTV he is now reviewing this blog and our facebook info. Lets post those memos and show him that we have an exciting bunch of kids that are worthy of being featured on MTV.

Reach for the stars and never give up on your dreams!

Final Exam

Good afternoon everyone. For those of you who don't know, for your final exam you will be creating a fact sheet and flyer about Rain Barrels. Please check out the blog post and video about rain barrels to start preparing for the exam.

Paper plates instead of plastic ones.

I had the idea that paper plates would be more eco friendly than plastic plates. I'm aware that deforestation is occuring as a result of the demand for paper products but, we are not large enough to change that. So, I believe switching to paper plates would be a good step.

For example, a quick look on the web for cheap plates resulted this:

Reminder

Good afternoon everyone. Just a reminder that your memos are due on Friday. Please make sure to ask questions and conduct research so you can be ready to write! Also, as mentioned in class, please focus on three ideas in your memo. I'm still waiting for the information about energy and water use as well as building dimensions and square footage, but there's a lot you can still write about.

See you tomorrow.

Suggestion

Steve S. suggested that you contact some of the companies you're researching and give them a link to our blog. You can ask if they have any suggestions or further information which could help our project. This might also be helpful once we start working towards putting together specifics for the plan, getting bids for the job, and requesting funding.

Insulating paint

Everyone was asking about the paint with the R-19 insulation rating. There's a link to the right of the page "Super Therm" where you can watch a Youtube video.

Check out this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdoHh6i0kQg&NR=1

WIND MILL

i think wind mills woulds be a good idea for extrea power and the mills could be made out of cheap materals
I think we should all start spreading the word so everybody else in the school can also work on helping the school be more green.

Bird Houses

We could possibly take the scrap wood from the shops, in stead of throwing them away we could make bird houses or something out of them.

Pervious concrete =D

Something that our school should look into is pervious concrete. It would be a great way for us to contribute to the environment. It reduces harmful runoff and helps to filter storm water because of its high porosity. It allows water to drain into the ground unlike blacktop that we are using now.
Green roofs maybe? even though the only roof we can put it on is the foote building rood
